Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams

I was so looking forward to a visit to London and The Victoria and Albert Museum to see the new Christian Dior Exhibition.

I checked the dates when I was available but it was fully booked. So I thought in the meantime I would buy some souvenirs from the online shop. I really wanted a copy of the February 2019 limited edition Harper’s Bazaar magazine for the V&A featuring a photo of Princess Margaret photographed by Cecil Beaton in 1951 on the cover.

But it was not to be. There were two copies left in the V&A shop, when I went to have breakfast. I came back and they were gone!

In the end I settled for a few things including the DVD ‘Dior and I’ by Frédéric Tcheng.

And I am so glad I chose this. I have watched it twice now and can’t recommend it more. It is just so fascinating. The DVD also has several extras including a Directors’ Documentary.

Vogue magazine listed it in the ” The Fashion documentaries to watch before applying for Fashion School. For a peek inside to the world of couture creations, watch Dior and I, which tells the story Raf Simons’s inauguration at the house of Dior following his appointment in 2012. Faced with the challenge of creating his debut couture collection as artistic director of the house in just eight weeks, Dior and I follows Raf on an intense, high-pressured journey, while paying homage to the seamstresses who help make his beautiful collection come to life.”

Vogue magazine also gave it a fab review in 2014 just before it was released on DVD.

“It’s all too easy to think that a fashion show and the clothes just happen when it comes to Fashion Week. Amid a social and style circus; a pit of flashbulbs, stars; celebrity and front row gossip; a collection struts out down a catwalk. We want to be that girl; we want that hair and make-up; and we want those clothes. It’s a grand feat of production. And it happens twice a year. But behind it, there are the designers: terrific geniuses but humans also. They have feelings, are scared and feel the pressure too. We forget that. Until you see it up close, which is exactly what Dior And I, the new fashion documentary film by Frederic Tcheng does.”

“There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.” Christian Dior

The film, premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2014 is widely available and distributed by Dogwoof.com. It came out on DVD and on demand in 2015, so you may already have it in your collection.

Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams is on now at the V&A until 19 July 2019.
